Open Energy Data
Overview
This site supports investment decisions on GB energy networks and generation connections. Each dataset brings together published data from Great Britain's distribution network operators, the National Energy System Operator, and Elexon, matched and cross-checked against a shared set of areas, zones, and years — so figures from different publishers can be compared side by side. Each page also states its own level of detail and the coverage gaps or simplifying assumptions behind it.
Datasets
- Transmission Headroom — assessed import/export transmission headroom at boundary and ETYS transmission zone level.
- Growth by SSEP Zone — tRESP demand, generation, storage, and V2G trajectories aggregated to SSEP publication zone.
- Headroom & Growth by GSP Area — distribution network headroom and tRESP demand/generation growth by GSP area.
- Headroom by Substation — individual substation-level network headroom within a chosen DNO licence area.
- Growth by Technology Mix — tRESP building-block quantities by technology, GSP area, pathway, and year, with a national roll-up.
- Generation & Storage Connection Queue — named TEC register projects awaiting or progressing through connection, plus GSP area and SSEP-zone aggregate totals by project status.
- Generation & Storage Asset Registry — named, already-connected generation and storage assets (BM units) and their location.
- Generation Curtailment — Elexon BOALF curtailment energy normalised by TEC-registered capacity, at both GSP area and SSEP zone level.
Before you dive in
Learn these patterns once here, and you won't need to relearn them on each page:
- Forecasts blend two sources. Distribution-level pages (Headroom & Growth by GSP Area, Headroom by Substation) join each DNO's own published 2025–2030 forecast to one NESO regional growth pathway — Holistic Transition, Electric Engagement, or Hydrogen Evolution — from 2031 onwards. The result reads as a single continuous timeline, not a choice between the two forecasts. Holistic Transition runs the full 2025–2050 horizon; the other two pathways only start from 2035, so selecting them narrows the years available.
- Some pages use two geographies that don't always agree. Most pages report figures at GSP area level, SSEP publication zone level, or both. Where a page shows both (Generation Curtailment, Generation & Storage Connection Queue), it resolves each geography independently, and the two views are not guaranteed to reconcile row-for-row — treat each as internally consistent on its own terms, not as two readings of the same number. Where a GSP area's boundary overlaps more than one SSEP zone, we split its figures across those zones in proportion to the overlapping area, rather than double-count them.
