Growth by SSEP Zone
Overview
This page shows projected demand, generation, storage, and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) capacity for each NESO SSEP publication zone (onshore and offshore), by scenario pathway and year out to 2050.
This is the zone-level counterpart to the growth figures on the Headroom & Growth by GSP Area page. Use it instead of that page when you want zone-level geography — matching the SSEP zones used elsewhere in transmission reporting — rather than the more detailed GSP area breakdown.
This page shows Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) as a negative value — unlike every other metric here. V2G offsets peak demand rather than adding installed capacity, so a negative figure means demand reduction, not reduced capacity.
The year slider adjusts its range to match the selected scenario: Holistic Transition spans 2025–2050, while Economy Efficient and High Electrification start at 2035, since NESO doesn't publish those two pathways any earlier.
How to read the map: pick a scenario, a metric, and a year, and the colour of each zone shows that metric's value. Hover over a zone to see its exact figure. Use the trajectory chart further down the page to see how a single zone's figure changes across the whole horizon, rather than at one point in time.

How to read this chart: the map above shows one point in time. This chart instead follows a single zone across the whole horizon — 2025–2050 (or 2035–2050 for Economy Efficient/High Electrification) — under the scenario selected above, so you can see the shape of its growth, not just a snapshot.
Data sources
- Demand, generation, storage, and V2G trajectories: NESO's regional energy scenario pathways (tRESP), the same underlying projections used for the longer-term growth figures on the Headroom & Growth by GSP Area page, aggregated here to SSEP zone geography instead of GSP area.
- Scenario pathway: each pathway (Holistic Transition, Economy Efficient, or High Electrification) represents a distinct, published assumption about how quickly the electricity system decarbonises, and drives a different trajectory for demand and generation growth.
- Zone geography: NESO's Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSEP) publication zones, covering both onshore and offshore areas, as used in NESO's own transmission planning reports.
- GSP area to zone allocation: the underlying tRESP figures are published at GSP area level and re-aggregated here to SSEP zone. Where a GSP area's boundary overlaps more than one zone (some coastal GSP areas genuinely span both an onshore and an offshore zone), its figures are split across those zones in proportion to the overlapping area, rather than counted in full against every zone touched.
- Totals on this page won't sum to the national tRESP total. A handful of NESO's published GSP areas aren't real geographic areas at all — they're national or wider-network catch-all buckets (e.g. a "national grid" total, a "wider network" total, and a "not yet connected" bucket for demand that hasn't been assigned a connection point). Since these don't sit inside any SSEP zone, their figures can't be allocated to one and are intentionally left out of every zone shown here, rather than being forced into the nearest zone.
