Growth by Technology Mix
Overview
This page breaks the demand and generation growth figures shown elsewhere down into their technology building blocks — how much of each pathway's total comes from wind, solar, heat pumps, batteries, and so on, both nationally and by GSP area.
Important: a technology's quantity may be denominated in MW, GWh, Number, or m², and quantities are only additive within the same unit — if you sum across units, the total is meaningless. That's why the charts below always group and colour by unit.
Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) shows as a negative value, unlike every other technology on this page. V2G offsets peak demand rather than adding installed capacity, so its negative figure represents a demand reduction, not a fault in the data — you'll see it pull the "Storage" group down rather than add to it.
Note: the GSP-area breakdown below uses a 5-year cadence (2025, 2030, …, 2050) instead of every year, because the full annual series broken down by GSP area is too large for the browser to load for interactive filtering. The national trajectory chart still plots every year.
How to read these charts: the bar chart below shows every technology's quantity at a single point in time, coloured by technology group, filtered to whichever unit you choose above. The trajectory chart follows the same selection across the whole 2025–2050 horizon instead of one year, so you can see the shape of each technology group's growth rather than a snapshot.
Available years differ by pathway: Holistic Transition spans 2025–2050, while Electric Engagement and Hydrogen Evolution start at 2035, since NESO doesn't publish those two pathways any earlier — the year slider adjusts its range to match whichever pathway you pick.

- Technology building blocks: NESO's regional energy scenario pathways (tRESP), the same underlying projections used for the growth figures on the Headroom & Growth by GSP Area and Growth by SSEP Zone pages, broken down here into their individual technology components (e.g. onshore wind, heat pumps, battery storage) rather than rolled up into totals.
- Scenario pathway: each pathway (Holistic Transition, Electric Engagement, or Hydrogen Evolution) represents a distinct, published assumption about how quickly the electricity system decarbonises, driving a different technology mix.
- Units: each technology is measured in whatever unit NESO publishes it in — MW, GWh, a count of units, or an area in m² — which is why totals are only combined within a matching unit, never across units.
- Offshore wind is not covered by this page. NESO's tRESP technology building blocks don't include offshore wind at all — it's tracked separately through the transmission connection process rather than the regional scenario pathways shown here.
